Recreation Therapist
Duties: Recreational therapists plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-based treatment programs for people with disabilities, injuries, or illnesses. These therapists use a variety of modalities, including arts and crafts, drama, music, and dance, sports and games and community outings to help maintain or improve a patient’s physical, social, and emotional well-being. Help people reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. Therapists may also provide interventions for patients who need help developing social and coping skills. For example, a therapist may use a therapy dog to help patients manage their depression or anxiety
Salary: $27,858-$52,682
Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation to qualify for a position. A therapeutic recreation degree program includes coursework in anatomy, human behavior, assessment and documentation, clinical procedures and health psychology. An internship is typically part of a bachelor’s degree program. Graduate degree programs provide an opportunity for recreational therapists to specialize within the field. Areas of specialization may focus on patient populations, such as pediatrics or geriatrics.
